Who or what inspired you to take up composing, and pursue a career in music? I have to say my parents. They created the circumstances
I think we all need to keep exploring and expanding our horizons and experiences. We need to stop comparing ourselves to others, and think more about challenging ourselves to be the best we can be. As Rachmaninoff said, “Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music.”
As a player heavily involved in the historical performance movement, I guess my path has always diverged from a conventional view of ‘success’. I believe it is vital to do whatever we do to the very best it could be done, whether that be performing, teaching, researching.
For me, success is performing. There’s nothing I love more than conducting my own music, sharing it with both the musicians and the public. It’s an huge honour to be able to do this and I am grateful for every opportunity.
