As well as musical influences, everyday life and occurrences influence me. What I bring to the stage is not only my performance and understanding of the music, but my personality, experience and perceptions. The work I do is affected by everything I encounter and perceive. So I go to lots of concerts and meet lots of different people, and generally feel open to new possibilities.
Never think purely in terms of your own instrument. If you are learning music by a particular composer listen to as much of their music as you can (Symphonies, Lieder, Opera, Chamber music), and then listen to the music that influenced them.
I love devising programmes for festivals such as the St Marylebone Festival where we theme everything along cultural history and our local community
