The main purpose for me as a composer is to communicate ideas, ask questions and trigger emotion in my audience and performers. If someone comes up to me and expresses some form of reaction and thoughts after hearing my music, I think I have succeeded.
The fewer the notes, the better I play. That’s what I learned. Not sure what that says about me. But on a certain level, I feel that my preoccupation with overtones, and a vertical upward and downward connection to the sound – to some kind of ether and to some kind of abyss – takes time
We are always only a little part of the entirety of music. For sure you can play alone but without many other participants beforehand or during the performance like the composer himself, the audience, the partners, the luthier or architect who built the hall it wouldn’t be the same. One alone is basically nothing.
