I work on a project-by-project basis. I find people I love to collaborate with, and then create the projects around that. The repertoire choices will grow out of that, and of how we want to grow the programme.
I always wanted to be closer to music. Conducting was a natural extension and progression from my experience as a horn player. The challenge of trying to imagine a complex score written by someone else took this magical internal activity even further than playing one line. Perhaps the ultimate version of this is to imagine one’s own sounds.
in music you never stop learning
As a minimalist, I don’t have many possessions, other than my instruments. I was gifted with an Arnold Dolmetsch harpsichord earlier this year. I believe this tops my list of special instruments.
