Joe Lovano

Joe Lovano, saxophonist

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

My Dad Tony “Big T” Lovano was my main inspiration, teacher and influence from my earliest days in Music.. He was a major Jazz Saxophonist on the scene in my home town of Cleveland, Ohio. My dad heard Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and many others live and was an inspired young man himself.. He taught how and what to listen too and learn how to teach myself to play and create music..

What has been the greatest challenge of your career so far?

The greatest challenge has been to develop a repertoire and a sound of my own.

Which recordings/performances are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of having had created a extended discography including recording as a leader for Soul Note, Jazz Club, Label Bleu, Enja, Blue Note & ECM records since 1985. These days collaborating with Douglas Cuomo has been a highlight of my creative life in music.

Tell us more about your collaboration with composer Douglas J Cuomo…

The release on Blue Cloud Music of “a raft the sky the wild sea” an original concerto for saxophone written for me by Maestro Douglas Cuomo is my first experience creating music with a full symphony orchestra, live in concert with the Winston Salem Symphony, was the trill of a lifetime. I would hope that folks that experience our offering will be inspired to listen repeatedly with new appreciation each time.

What do you do offstage that provides inspiration on stage?

Live in the library of the sounds and spirits within the world of music, my relationship with my family and nature.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

The more I share the blessings, the more I feel successful..

What’s the one thing we’re not taling about in the music industry that you think we should be?

The offering of Love and Gratitude in the music and not just the commercialism that drive the industry. To inspire future generations be creative and embrace the humanity that brings folks together.

What advice would you give to young and aspiring musicians?

To live in the library of the sounds and spirits of the masters.
