Melody and harmony are important to me, almost always in the context of prevailing diatonic tonality, either directly or indirectly, and also strong personality and individuality of expression and purpose, otherwise I think there is probably no point in writing a piece
You need a degree of self-belief to keep going – composing is actually quite hard work.
My pieces have tended to be dramatic, atmospheric, multi-tonal, quirky… nothing is set so I am compositionally flexible!
The greatest challenge is to have a career as a composer!
My composing method varies piece by piece and the challenge is staying open and not judging how it wants to present itself.
