Meet the Artist is delighted to feature a series of interviews with composers from around the world who have been commissioned by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) to write music to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx.
Specially commissioned music by Robert Reid Allan, Sergej Newski, Celeste Oram, Frédéric Pattar, Kaspar Querfurth, Richie Wang and nine winners of the Wilde Lieder Marx.Music International Call for Scores, performed by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group conducted by Michael Wendeberg with soprano Elizabeth Atherton & baritone Marcus Farnsworth. BCMG’s musicians will premiere the works in six days of events in Birmingham and at venues in Trier – Karl Marx’s birthplace, as well as presenting soundart installations at the V&A in London and the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift Trier.
Birmingham Contemporary Music Group is one of the world’s foremost new music ensembles. Over three decades, BCMG has developed the music of today for the audiences of tomorrow. The ensemble has commissioned over 175 pieces of music from the world’s finest composers and emerging international talent. BCMG was founded by musicians from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 1987, with Sir Simon Rattle as Founding Patron. Since then, BCMG has reached over 10 million people in concert and through broadcasts, and its work both inside and outside the concert hall has earned it many awards and accolades.
